Kelley Hamilton of Bonaventure says that for minor ailments like headaches and sore throats, many people turn to kitchen-based remedies to soothe symptoms.

According to Kelley Hamilton of Bonaventure, worries about the economy are driving more people to alternative remedies as they look for ways to save money on expensive doctor visits and prescription medicines. Here, Kelley Hamilton of Bonaventure talks about alternative remedies for common ailments people of all ages can try.

Interviews and News: Thank you, Kelley, for joining us.

Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO: Thanks for having me.

Interviews and News: A recent survey found that more and more people turn to home remedies when it comes to minor ailments. Why do you think that is?

Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO: I think it’s a combination of two things—saving money by skipping doctor visits and expensive prescription drugs, and trying to find natural remedies without any harsh chemicals.

Interviews and News: As the CEO of Bonaventure Senior Living, you know a thing or two about seniors. Tell us, what are some of the more common ailments seniors suffer from?

Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO: The most common ailment in the senior citizen population is probably arthritis.

Interviews and News: Could you explain how this ailment affects seniors?

Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO: Arthritis is joint inflammation, usually accompanied by pain and stiffness. It can affect mobility and quality of life for the elderly.

Interviews and News: How does one manage arthritis?

Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO: Besides the most commonly prescribed drugs to control pain, natural and alternative treatments include exercising, massages, herbs, and a healthy diet consisting of lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Interviews and News: Speaking of healthy food, one of the reasons so many seniors choose Bonaventure as their living community is because of the delicious dining options. Would you say seniors can find natural remedies in food sources?

Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO: Absolutely. Take bananas, for instance. Individuals who need an instant boost in their energy level can reach for a banana instead of an energy drink. It’s cheaper and healthier.

Interviews and News: My grandmother tends to get a sore throat during the colder months. What natural treatment would you recommend for her?

Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO: Well, this is what I learned from my grandmother. In the Ukraine, many people gargle hot water with a tablespoon of honey and vinegar. Honey is an anti-inflammatory, and the vinegar helps clear the nose.

Interviews and News: I’ll be sure to let her know.

Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO: Most people have these ingredients in their kitchen.

Interviews and News: Do you have a favorite remedy for common issues?

Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO: Water, exercise and laughter. I make an effort to drink at least eight glasses daily. Research has shown that drinking water helps improve mental performance, and water rids toxins from the body.

Interviews and News: What type of exercise do you recommend?

Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO: I like to walk and laugh off stress.

Interviews and News: What effect do those have on stress?

Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO: They reduce blood pressure and move stress hormones out of the body.
